Resort Overview

Ski Miquel has been coming to Bad Gastein for over 25 years and this attractive spa resort has always been a firm favourite with many of our guests. Only 1.5 hours from Salzburg, it has a larger ski area and higher mountains than most other Austrian resorts.

Varied ski area

The Gastein valley offers diverse skiing and snowboarding across five scenic ski areas with wide, well-groomed pistes, super-quick modern lifts and rarely a queue in sight.

Steady skiers and snowboarders can cruise the whole west side on a great range of red and blue runs, including the longest piste in the Central Eastern Alps (an impressive 11km long!) and then take one of the super new gondola lifts back up from Bad Hofgastein.

Modern lifts

The Gastein region has continually invested in upgrading it's lift system including the new Kieserlbahn gondola fitted just last year to add to the 6 gondolas it already had.

If you want a taste of the high Alps then join our ski hosting groups which explore a different ski area each day including Sportgastein, which has big terrain to explore and holds the snow well into the Spring months due to its high position.

For novices there are also some more gentle areas, with nice blue runs that wind around the mountain to help build up your confidence.

The thermal spa baths in Bad Gastein

Non-Ski Activities

There is plenty to see and do in Bad Gastein. After a day on the mountain, why not try the thermal baths in the centre of the village, with outdoor heated pools for you to soak your aching muscles in and enjoy the views of the magnificent snow-capped peaks around you.

If you're looking for a more unique spa experience, you can head to the Radhausberg, which is an old gold mine where you take a mining train into the mountain and enjoy the geothermal high temperatures and naturally occurring radon therapy, which Gastein is famous for.

For those who like walking and hiking, there are hundreds of kilometres of signposted hiking trails in the Gastein valley, which are of varying difficulty and lead you through the trees and up to the mountain huts on the pistes.

Or why not try a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forests and see the mountains from a different perspective?

Alternatively you can take the direct train from the station in the village down to Salzburg and visit the birthplace of Mozart with its medieval castle. Take a day to explore the city, then get back to our chalet-hotel in Bad Gastein in time for the evening meal.

View of Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein village

Bad Gastein is a charming Austrian resort with an excellent selection of shops and facilities, and a dramatic waterfall which roars through the heart of the village. Its streets are lined with classic Austrian architecture, and it was once the playground of Tsars, Kings and Emperors of Europe.

Famed for the healing properties of the local waters, Bad Gastein is home to one of the world’s best thermal spas, which lies just over the road from the ski slopes, where you can sit in the warm outdoor pools and take in the magnificent views - the perfect way to recuperate after a day of exertion on the mountain!

Bad Gastein is also a good place to experience the lively Austrian après-ski. The Silver Bullet has top-quality live music and a fantastic atmosphere, and there are plenty of other bars and quieter traditional eateries, or you could even consider taking a romantic sleigh ride!

Restaurants

There is no shortage of good restaurants in Bad Gastein, and there is somewhere to suit every budget. If you're looking for the best traditional Austrian cuisine you can't go wrong with the Gasteiner Wirtshaus or the Jägerhäusl. Both offer a fantastic array of Austrian dishes at reasonable prices.

For something a little more low-key, the Orania Stüberl has a cosy rustic atmosphere with tasty Austrian classics. Their helpful and friendly staff are always on-hand and provide great service.

Drinks at the Silver Bullet

Bars

Bad Gastein is a great place for lively Austrian après-ski. The Silver Bullet has top quality live music and a fantastic atmosphere - Expect there to be standing room only on some nights, and lots of dancing!

Haeggbloms Bar also has live music most nights and what it lacks in size it makes up for in personality - The bands and staff are very lively, so expect a good laugh!

There are plenty of other bars and quieter spots available, one highlight being Ginger 'n' Gin, with its art deco styling and a huge array of different gins on offer to help you relax after a day on the slopes.

Reviews

Fantastic experience with Ski Miquel

Just back from another Ski Miquel holiday. A fantastic holiday with great ski guiding. My wife was in the slower cappuccino group and I was with the faster expresso groups so we were both kept very happy. Great food and service in the chalet. The chalet is not luxury but more than adequate and for the price is exceptional value. I highly recommend.

Ski trip with family and friends

Hotel was exactly what you need for a ski trip, staff service from Osh, Kate, Will, Eleyna and Petra was fantastic. Food/drinks were brilliant! The concierge service was amazing and all the staff were amazing and really made the trip special!
Can’t recommend this enough
.

Great location and even better staff

Really great experience, the location was great not too far at all from the slopes and ski rents. All staff were so friendly and made the experience even better. They got involved with us all and we all had a great time.

Amazing staff and a brilliant week's skiing

Just had an amazing week with Ski Miquel in Bad Gastein, wonderful ski guiding by Fia, amazing food and hospitality by the chalet team and a great group of people in the chalet.
All the staff were so helpful and friendly and the cooked breakfasts were the perfect start for a day's skiing.

Ganz gemutlich!

Great week's skiing/boarding with the Ski Miquel team at the Tannenburg.
Great service from the whole team.
Petra's cooking was excellent and with cakes, canapés, three courses and the cheeseboard we had to ski hard to justify all that delicious food...served with aplomb and friendliness by Lily, Kate and Flo.
Ski concierging took us to the right areas for the day's conditions, letting us make the most of the best slopes. Thanks Will and Osh!
Beds very comfy also.
Recommended!

Great experience. I’ll go again!

I had a wonderful stay here with ski Miquel holidays. The location was great, a short 10minute walk to bad gastein ski lifts, central enough to visit bars and shops in town and quiet enough to sleep like a log. The atmosphere in the chalet was very homely with a wood burning fire in the lounge, a pub like mini bar but it still felt comfy enough to gather in joggy bottoms / PJs. My room was very spacious with plenty of storage for clothes etc. the view from my room was epic. The team (will, osh, Kate, flo & Petra) at the hotel were fantastic offering great attentive service on all parts - food service, help with luggage on leaving and on arrival, ski concierge… they really went above and beyond.

AMAZING

Wonderful staff! Amazing food and wonderful bar! All in all a wonderful experience that I highly recommend, thank you for making this ski trip memorable.

Best ski holiday ever!

We’re just travelling back from an unforgettable 7 days at Chalet-Hotel Tannenburg over Christmas, and it was absolutely incredible! Maria, the manager, is fantastic - fun, caring, and always going the extra mile. Fia was a brilliant ski guide, making our time on the slopes even more enjoyable. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the team.
The whole team, including Caoimhe, Laura, and Gerald, were amazing and worked seamlessly together. Truly, teamwork is dream work!
The ski guiding was a real highlight, as was hiring skis with Ski Miquel, which included free storage near the lifts - perfect for tired legs at the end of the day. Skiing in Bad Gastein itself was a dream, with fantastic runs for every level: blue, red, and black. Plus, the easy access to buses meant we could explore other areas and keep things fresh.
A special mention goes to the Felsentherme spa - a heavenly treat after a day on the slopes.
Without a doubt, we’ll be travelling with Ski Miquel again. This was hands-down the best ski holiday ever!

Superb Experience 🤘

With Ski Miquel our experience was fantastic. We went over Christmas and it was like a family away from home. The staff Maria, Sofia, Laura, Caoimhe and Chef Gerrard made our experience amazing. It was a lovely (hilly) resort and ski hire was smooth. Being able to leave our skis and snowboard in the locker near the lifts was convenient and the chalet was about a 5 minute walk from the gondola and buses. I send my greatest thanks to the staff and wish them all the best!

Ski Miquel Delivers Again in Austria

My party of 21 had an enjoyable half-term week with Ski Miquel in the underrated resort of Bad Gastein. Chalet Tannenburg is ideally located 5 mins from the main gondola with wonderful views over the town and valley below. As with all SM accommodation, the rooms are basic but hot water is plentiful and the beds are comfy. Chalet Tannenburg’s dining area has space for all the guests and the atmospheric bar, which is open to the public (but only those ‘in the know’) has the cheapest prices in the resort at 4.5 Euros for a large beer. We loved skiing in the Gastein valley, which has reliable snow and plenty to offer but is not for near beginners and timid intermediates. We hired our skis and bought our lift passes thru’ SM, as this offered the best value for money and included handy ski storage at the main gondola. The après ski in resort has something for everyone, with The Silver Bullet & its live band a favourite with our group. As ever, the SM team were wonderful, with Chef Paulo doing justice to the menu and Emily, Daisy, Alex and Will looking after us all exceptionally well – thank you guys! If you’re seeking a good-value ski holiday, in a solid location with good food, a cheap bar, friendly staff & guests but no frills, then look no further than Ski Miquel. We’ve been coming to their resorts for 6 years now and will be back!

Ski holiday

Our third Ski Miquel holiday. We love the formula - in particular the group dining and ski hosting. Thanks to Will, Paulo, Emily and Alex for looking after us and David and Daisy for ski hosting. We are already planning our next Ski Miquel trip!

A fun ski holiday

We like the Ski Miquel formula. A good value holiday in accommodation which is conducive to meeting new people. The staff are all friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. The ski hosting was great fun. The staff have just one day off which gives a chance to sample some local cuisine.

A lovely introduction to skiing for a novice

This was my first ski trip, and I had an amazing time. Super friendly staff, very well organised and lovely food. The staff organise regular ski trips where they show you the routes, and split you into different groups depending on your preference. Hope to come back soon :)

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay

I had an excellent ski holiday with some great snow and varying Conditions throughout the week. All three ski hosts very good. Chalet staff friendly, approachable and welcoming, would highly recommend a stay in the 2024 season, will definitely visit again.

Excellent value in a friendly environment

Great fun and excellent value. The highs were manager David who is also a fantastic skier and provides really useful tips on your skiing. He was really attentive to the needs for good service and dealt with any hiccup that arose without undue fuss - his scrambled eggs were superb! The location is very good with easy access to the lifts. It is great having the bar in the hotel and we had a very good and diverse set of guests whose company was very welcoming on both the ski fields and around the communal areas. Ralph, the owner, was present and his passion for the business was great to see. All in all a very good holiday at very reasonable prices.

Great stay in the Chalet with Ski Miquel

Just had a week with Ski Miquel staying at this chalet. We had a fantastic week which can be put down to the staff under the great management of Idan. He was also an excellent ski guide for the week. The skiing and the town of Bad Gastein are brilliant and there are lots to see and do either in town or by taking the train into Salzburg. A big thank you to you all!

Lovely staff and a fantastic week

We have just returned from a week at the chalet-hotel Tannenburg in Bad Gastein. We had a fantastic week and really enjoy the relaxed chalet-hotel model Ski Miquel make the most of (this was our fifth stay in a Ski Miquel chalet). The chef Paulo and his assistant chef made fantastic meals all week and really went out of their way to make good delicious food for our daughter which she was able to have earlier as waiting until 8pm would have been too long for her. Paolo was also lovely to chat to over cake after a long day skiing. Idan, Iona, Rebecca and Tom were very friendly, helpful and generally pleasant to be around each day. We had a few beginners and a child so we didn’t join the ski guiding this year but the other guests seemed to really enjoy it and only had good things to say about the guides and the trips to Sportgastein and Dorfgastein. Wednesday is the night off - we took the chair lift to the belle alm for fondue which we recommend but booking ahead is necessary and the Felsentherme spa is worth a trip, discount is available if you book 3 trips at once.

Fantastic holiday

Wow amazing stay and skiing with Ski Miquel! Shout out to Manny, Leah and Patrick, hands down the best chalet staff around! Always looked after us and recommended the best nights out!! Such a friendly group!! The chalet was perfect for a big group of family and friends, really interactive stay and perfect location to slopes and access to buses to other resorts! Would definitely recommend.

Glorious Bad Gastein

This was another great skiing holiday with Ski Miquel, staying in the characterful Tannenburg. We first visited in 2018 and were so impressed that we returned this year and, again, were not disappointed. Dave, our resort manager and ski host, was brilliant as usual and made sure that everyone settled in quickly and were well looked after, both in the chalet and on the slopes. The skiing here is extensive and varied and under Dave's expert guidance we covered the pistes in Bad Gastein, Graukogel, Bad Hofgastein, Dorfgastein, Angertal and Sportgastein. Brilliant. A special mention for Ashley and her team, who worked so hard to make sure that the food at the Tannenburg was top class, with tasty and plentiful breakfasts, afternoon tea and cake for those who could tear themselves away from the apres-ski and excellent three-course dinners plus cheese and wine. Many thanks to all the staff. All in all this was a fantastic week, made all the more fun by a great crowd of guests who gelled from day one. Definitely a holiday to remember.

Great trip made even better by the people

This was our family’s fourth trip with Ski Miquel to Bad Gastein. It was the first week of the season, so snow can be a risk. There was an excellent team led by Dave, ably helped by Ashley, Ben, Nadine and Fern. Food was especially good. Ski Miquel works with friendly guests in a cosy setting. It is the best value skiing holiday that we know. Keep up the good work.
