Snowshoeing Bad Gastein
Looking for an alternative to skiing for a day?
One of our guests recently asked me about snowshoeing, so I thought I would write a little article about it in Bad Gastein, a beautiful village in the Salzburg region of Austria. If you are looking for a winter adventure that combines nature, sport and wellness, then this is the place for you!
Explore the landscapes
Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the snowy landscapes of the Gastein Valley, without sinking into the deep snow or needing any special skills. You just strap on your snowshoes and off you go on untouched trails or prepared snowshoe tours.
You can enjoy the fantastic mountain scenery of Austria alone or on a guided snowshoe hike. I chose to join a guided tour with a local expert, who showed me some of the best spots and gave me some interesting facts about the area.
A story of the walk
We started our tour from the Skicenter Angertal, where we rented our snowshoe equipment. The rental was easy and convenient, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We paid 15 Euros per person for the snowshoes and poles, which was quite reasonable. You can find more information about snowshoes rental on the Gastein website.
The tour lasted about two hours, and we covered a distance of around 5 kilometres. We hiked along leisurely circular trails, through snow-covered forests and meadows, and up to some panoramic viewpoints. The sun was shining from a clear blue sky, and the snow was sparkling like diamonds. It was a magical sight!
One of the highlights of the tour was reaching the Fulseck, a mountain peak that offers breathtaking views over the Gastein Valley and the surrounding Hohe Tauern mountains. We took some time to admire the scenery and take some photos. Here is one of my favorite shots:
As you can see, it was worth every step! The guide also told us some interesting facts about the Fulseck, such as that it is one of the oldest ski areas in Austria, dating back to 1930, and that it is connected to the neighboring Großarltal valley by a cable car.
After enjoying the views, we headed back down to the lift mid-station, where we returned our equipment and took a bus back to Bad Gastein. The bus ride was included in our tour price, which was 25 Euros per person.
